I Had a Parrot Who…Part 3

Have you ever gotten in trouble for something you didn’t do? Remember how you felt as you tried to convince the person that you were innocent?

I had a parrot who…

Wolf whistled at self-conscious people to get us in trouble.

We absolutely did not teach Squirt to wolf whistle. There was a guard station across the street from our front porch. The guards were hired to protect our neighborhood, but they didn’t do a very good job. They spent most of their time harassing poor people who rushed to the bus stop or simply walked by. They’d call out things to make the people flustered. If they saw a pretty lady, they would wolf whistle.

Squirt must have been entertained by their behavior and the reactions they got, because he picked up on it, and figured out when to use the new skill, especially on visitors who we were trying to make a good impression on.

From his cage on the porch, Squirt would see a woman who looked uncomfortable in their outfit and didn’t want to be noticed—maybe they would fidget with the shirt and readjust their shorts— and let out a very loud and unmistakable wolf whistle.

The recipient of the whistle would turn beet red and start spluttering as feelings of humiliation and dread washed over them. After trying to compose herself, the lady would look around to see who she should rail into for whistling at her.

Doesn’t he look so innocent?

Who would ever suspect that face?

Squirt was pretty good at making sure that there was a member of our family around, especially my dad or brother, who could take the blame for the misbehavior. My dad and brother would end up gasping and waving their arms to prove their innocence to no avail and eventually have to apologize even though it was the bird’s fault.

Anyone who happened to witness one of these events would be rolling on the floor laughing so hard tears would stream down their faces.

I had a parrot who purposely did things to get people in trouble.

Squirt wants to know if your pet’s ever gotten you in trouble for something you didn’t do? What was it? How did you feel? Were you able to prove that you were innocent? Did you get the punishment even though it wasn’t your fault?
